8500 light years from Earth in the Southern constellation of Carina, this great nebula is the largest diffuse nebula in our skies, 4 times larger than the famous Orion nebula, but it’s location in the southern hemisphere has meant it’s not as often discussed.
The nebula contains a large amount of giant blue O type stars, and a number of extreme neutron stars known as Wolf-Rayet stars, one of which is the most luminous object known in our Milky Way. Additionally near the centre there is the Eta Carina star which periodically blows of shells of matter, as it nears the end of it’s life.
